In May 1895, seventeen years before the foundation of Republic of China, the Ching Dynasty ceded Taiwan to Japan after losing the First Sino-Japanese War in the previous summer. The Military Medical Affairs Bureau of the Armed Services of the Empire of Japan founded the Hsin-Chu Hospital after its take-over from the authority of the Ching Dynasty. It was soon transferred under the governance of the
Hsin-Chu Sub-bureau of the Taipei Prefecture the next June in 1896 and was formally named as the
Hsin-Chu Hospital. It was renamed as the Hsin-Chu Hospital of the
Hsin-Chu County in 1897 and established a branch hospital in Miao-li County. It was further assigned under the governance of the Governor-General of Taiwan the
following year in 1898 and abolished its Miaoli branch hospital
utill the return of Taiwan from Japan to China at the end of the World War II in 1945.
Period of Japanese Occupation:
Initially taking a corner of the Office of the
Hsin-Chu County in its
establishment, Hsin-Chu Hospital was relocated to the
Dragon King Temple and the Nursery on Nanmen Street in June 1897. New buildings were not completed until September 1907 at the current address of 59 Shimen Street. It took more than one decade
to finish the construction of the wards, operation
rooms, and dormitories in October 1922. In 1930, the
gradual addition of the brick auditorium and
concrete outpatient building completed the
construction of Hsin-Chu Hospital.
Early Post-WWII Era:
After the return of Taiwan from Japan to China in August 1945,
Hsin-Chu Hospital was transferred under the governance of the Hygiene Bureau of the Civil Branch of the Taiwan Provincial Executive Office on Nov. 24, 1945. It was later on renamed as the Provincial
Hsin-Chu Hospital under the
supervision of the Department of Health of the Taiwan Provincial Government.
Construction of New
Buildings:
Plans to replace buildings more than six decades old began by budgetary planning in fiscal year 1978. The first new building was constructed from July 1979 to the end of 1982 at the current address of 25 Lane 442,
Jing-Guo Road Section One. It opened on New Year's
Day in 1983. With increasing demands, the second new building was
built and up for running in December 1999 after six years of construction, making
Hsin-Chu Hospital a total of 637 beds. From July 1st, 1999, in compliance with downsizing of administration hierarchy, Provincial
Hsin-Chu Hospital was renamed as the Hsin-Chu General Hospital, directly under the governance of the Department of Health of the Executive Yuan. In order to differentiate the two buildings, the old one was officially named as the "Bamboo Building", whilst the new one was named as the "New Building" since 2005.
On July 1, 2011, Hsin-Chu
General Hospital was renamed as National Taiwan
University Hospital Hsin-Chu Branch.
