▋ Education & Training

     The National Taiwan University Hospital Hsin-Chu Branch (NTUH Hsin-Chu Br.) provides clinical education and training for medical students, graduate students, and interns. We also provide post-graduate training for nurses, dentists, pharmacists, medical technicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, and psychologists.

▋ Educational Programs

  • Visiting Clinical Scholar Program
  • Fellowship Training Program
  • Elective Courses for Foreign Clinicians

     We provide elective training courses ranging from 2 weeks to several months, depending on the needs of each trainee or clinician. Our programs include are diverse, innovative and humanistic, with ample academic resources for prospective students from all backgrounds and clinicians from different fields.

▋ Evaluation and Certification

     Each trainee or student will be evaluated by their clinical mentor(s) when they complete their training courses. The evaluation standards include clinical skill proficiency, patient-centered care, and teamwork integration. Certification will be issued to trainees or students who pass the evaluation.

▋ How To Apply?

    Applicants who have completed their first year of post-graduate clinical training are welcome to participate in the program. Before application, be sure to meet requirements below.

▋ Admission Prerequisites & Requirements

  1. A certified medical license.
  2. Good academic standing.
  3. Completion of the first year of residency training.
  4. Proficiency in either Mandarin Chinese or English.

     Since our teaching and most clinical practice are conducted in Mandarin Chinese or Hokkien Taiwanese (English is used only in certain occasions), Mandarin Chinese proficiency is recommended for international students.

▋ Proof of Chinese proficiency can be provided via the following

  1. If the applicant received his/her primary education in Taiwan or China (PRC), list and highlight the school in the curriculum vitae.
  2. If the applicant can speak Chinese, a letter written by family members will be acceptable (e.g.: I hereby certify that the applicant is fluent in conversational Mandarin Chinese. [signature]).
  3. If the applicant is (has) enrolled in a Chinese language course, a certificate or a transcript from the language school is required.

▋ Application Documents Required

     The application documents should be submitted at least three months prior to program enrolment:

  1. A completed application form with a recent photograph (passport photo).
  2. A recommendation letter from your academic supervisor or the director of your residency training program.
  3. An essay describing your interests if accepted.
  4. Curriculum Vitae
  5. Photocopy of your medical diplomas.
  6. Photocopies of any medical/professional licenses.
  7. Proof of your residency training (at least one full year of post-graduate clinical training is required).
  8. A photocopy of your passport (the inner page containing personal information and photograph).
  9. A certificate of heath (w/o pulmonary tuberculosis and hepatitis B).
  10. Travel and health insurance certificates.
  11. Certificate of proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (optional).

▋ Application Procedures

     The application should be submitted at least 3 months before the planned training program; if the planned training duration exceeds three months, then application must be submitted 6 months before the training program. Once we receive the required documents, the application will be reviewed by the chairperson of the department responsible for training; the process usually takes around 10 weeks. If the application is accepted, an acceptance letter along with a training schedule will be sent. The applicant must contact us to confirm enrolment at least 4 weeks in advance of the program starting date. If the applicant wishes to withdraw the application or needs to change his/her arrival date, please notify us by e-mail at least 6 weeks in advance.
     Application documents will be reviewed jointly by our institution and the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Upon approval, the applicant will receive an acceptance letter, which is required for application of a Taiwan visa. The processing time usually takes around 3 months.

▋ Registration Procedure

  1. Upon arrival, please report to the Department of Education of the NTUH Hsin-Chu Br.
  2. We require one 1-inch headshot photo of the applicant taken within a year. The photo will be used for his/her NTUH Hsin-Chu Br. ID card during the training course.

▋ Learning at the NTUH Hsin-Chu Br.

  1. Every trainee is assigned a clinical mentor who is in charge of the overall objectives of the elective program and relevant issues.
  2. Orientation and introduction of the NTUH Hsin-Chu Br. will be provided to the trainees upon arrival.
  3. Trainees are not allowed to conduct any clinical practice without a valid professional license issued by the Taiwan (ROC) government.
  4. The clinical mentor may make modifications to the training course based on individual conditions of the trainees.
  5. Questionnaires:Each trainee will be required to fill out a set of questionnaires at the end of the program.

▋ Visa

     Each trainee is required to apply for either a Visitor Visa or a Resident Visa (for staying longer than 180 days in Taiwan) before arrival. Visas are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Taiwan ROC overseas missions.

▋ Long-term stays (>180 days)
Resident Visa holders are required to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) at the local service branch of the Ministry of Interior's Immigration Agency within 15 days of arrival. The application fee is NT$ 2,200 for single entry and NT$3,000 for multiple entries.

▋ Short-term stays
Visa holders may extend their stay for 15 days before the expiration of the current visa.

▋ Insurance

Valid travel and health insurance are required for travel to Taiwan. The trainee is responsible for his/her own health insurance. The Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) is available for ARC holders residing in Taiwan for over four months.

Food

     There is a food mall, bakery and a convenience store located behind the main hospital building (about NT$50-200 per meal). The eateries and stores at NTUH Hsin-Chu Br. offer a 10% discount for the staff of NTUH Hsin-Chu Br. The discount is only eligible if you show your NTUH Hsin-Chu Br.ID card.

Shopping

  1. A 24hr convenience store stocking food and necessities is located behind the main building.
  2. Many department stores, shopping districts, and smaller stores are located around the Hsinchu Railway Station area.

Climate

     The average temperature is between 25-37℃ during summer (May to September), 13-21℃ during winter (December to February), 15-26℃ during spring (March to April), and 17-28℃ during autumn (October to November). The typhoon season in Taiwan is from July to October. Average humidity ranges from 75~80%.

Transportation & Traffic

From CKS Airport to NTUH Hsin-Chu Branch: A regular shuttle bus terminal is located on the 1st floor of Terminals I and II of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The bus runs every 30~40 minutes between the airport and the Taoyuan High Speed Railway (THSR) Station. An THSR Train ride from Taoyuan to Hsinchu takes about 10 minutes. There are 2 ways to get to NTUH Hsin-chu Br. From the Hsinchu THSR Station: either take a local train from the interconnected Taiwan Railway (TRA) Liujia Station (NT 15) to North Hsinchu station, then walk to the hospital, or take a taxi (NT290~350).

▋ Traveling in Taiwan:

1. Local transportation: there are many ways to travel in Hsinchu city, including taxi, bus, and motorcycle. If you are planning to stay in Hsinchu for more than a month, we suggest that you buy an EasyCard for city bus and railways; the EasyCard is available at all 24hr convenience stores.

2. Intercity transportation: bus services, domestic flights, rental cars (international driver’s license required), Taiwan Railway, and Taiwan High Speed Rail are available for intercity travel.

     Compared with many large cities, Hsinchu has a relatively low crime rate. The streets are fairly safe, even at night. Like anywhere else in the world, travelers should stay alert when taking taxis alone at late hours; it is recommended to use a radio-dispatched cab service. Theft or robbery is not common, but we still advise caution in crowded buses, MRT, and places not mentioned in travel guides for foreigners.
